Carl Jay Carver, Jr., 81, of Cosby, Tennessee, took his final flight on June 11, 2026, leaving this world with the same quiet strength, dignity, and courage that defined his life. A devoted patriot, gifted aviator, and steadfast steward of the land, Jay lived with purpose and heart in everything he touched. He leaves behind a legacy built on service, grit, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved most. Jay was a phenomenal husband, father, grandfather, war hero, farmer, and outdoorsman—a true man’s man. Those who knew him best called him ‘the man, the myth, the legend,’ but they also knew the softer titles he wore just as proudly: taxi driver for grandchildren, sideline cheerleader, supporter of every dream his family dared to chase, and fiercely competitive player of any game placed before him—cards, baseball, badminton, volleyball, or holiday games around the living room. He greeted everyone with a smile big enough to warm a room and a laugh that wrapped around you like a hug. Born on January 30, 1945, to the late Carl and Emma Dean Wilson Carver, Jay grew up with a deep love for the land, animals and the outdoors—passions that would anchor him throughout his life. A proud graduate of Cosby High School’s Class of 1963, he went to Tennessee Technological University where he met a tall brunette sophomore from Sparta, TN, as a junior in January, proposed to her in March, and married Bettye Sue Officer on August 25, 1967. Jay earned his degree in Animal Husbandry in 1968. While at TN Tech, he rode bareback broncs and bulls as a member of the TN Tech Rodeo Club, already showing the grit and fearlessness that would define him, always listened to bluegrass music, loved to drag race and watch Nascar. Answering the call of duty, Jay served his country with honor in the United States Navy, earning his wings as a Naval Aviator. He flew the T‑34, T‑28, and C‑118, completing numerous deployments with extraordinary courage and professionalism. Rising to the rank of Commander, he served active duty from 1968–1973 with assignments in Pensacola, FL; Corpus Christi, TX; and Barber’s Point, Hawaii, with deployments to Vietnam, Cubi Point, Philippines, China, and throughout Asia. His son, Carl Jay Carver III (Jayson), was born in Cookeville, Tennessee, in November 1968 while Jay was attending U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. His daughter, Tamara Carver, was born in March at Tripler Army Hospital while serving at Barbers Point, Hawaii. Jay continued his service in the U.S. Navy Reserve at NAS Marietta, GA, from 1973–2005, including deployments to Rota, Spain, and the Mediterranean. After 36 combined years of active and reserve duty, he retired with distinction. Jay was honored to be a member of the April 12, 2023 Knoxville Honor Air Flight #32 as a United States Navy Vietnam War Veteran. He was honored to receive a beautiful quilt on March 23, 2024, from the Quilts of Valor Foundation recognizing his service and expressing the gratitude of a grateful nation. Jay’s two great loves were flying and farming, and the Navy Reserve allowed him to embrace both. When he wasn’t in the cockpit, he was on a tractor—transitioning between the two with ease and joy. He and his wife built and managed a thriving, diversified farm operation, and Jay poured the same discipline and precision into his land as he did into every flight proving that his hands were just as skilled at farming as they were at the cockpit controls. His days began at 4:00 a.m. with coffee and the newspaper, waiting for the sun to rise so he could get to work. He farmed until dark, and his family worked right beside him—often the only ones who could keep up with his long hours, especially during the demanding 20‑acre tobacco crop season, which began with sowing seeds and continued through field cultivation, harvesting, curing, and processing. He could cut two rows of tobacco stalks faster than anyone who ever worked in the field with him. His son, Jayson, learned his love of the land and his commitment to being a steward of the soil from his father, and he has continued the operation of the Carver Farm. Jay kept a garden that fed not only his family but many neighbors who could no longer grow their own. His compassion was as abundant as his harvest as he could often be found sharing his garden produce with many others who were no longer able to raise their own and who greatly appreciated his vegetables and his visit. A respected farmer in Cocke County, Jay was named the Cocke County Farm Bureau Young Farmer of the Year in 1977. He excelled in his Commercial Farrow-to-Finish Market Hog Operation, beef cattle, 20 acres of tobacco, and hay. The Carver family’s involvement in 4‑H wasn’t just a hobby—it was a defining part of Jayson and Tamara’s childhood and a point of pride for Jay. Their hogs were shown across county, district, and state competitions, where the standards were high and the competition fierce. 4‑H livestock shows required months of preparation: selecting the right hogs, daily feeding and conditioning, brushing and washing, learning proper showmanship, and mastering the skill of presenting animals confidently in the ring. Jayson and Tamara excelled in all of it. The Carver hogs became well known for their quality and consistency. At fairs and shows across Tennessee, they earned Champion and Reserve Champion titles in multiple weight classes, purple ribbons for top‑tier excellence, blue ribbons for class wins, showmanship awards recognizing the skill and professionalism of the exhibitors, plaques and trophies at county, district, and state competitions. These awards were earned year after year—from the time Jayson and Tamara were first old enough to step into the show ring until the day they went to college. Their success reflected not only their hard work, but also Jay’s dedication to raising exceptional livestock and teaching his children responsibility, discipline, and pride in their work. In 1994, Jay and his family partnered in one of the original twelve whitewater rafting companies on the Big Pigeon River, known as Big Pigeon Rafting, established after a private act opened the river for commercial rafting. With the same work ethic and determination that defined every part of his life, Jay helped manage and operate the company for many years, welcoming visitors from across the country to experience the beauty and excitement of the river he knew so well. The business remained a meaningful family endeavor until Jayson and Tamara chose very different career paths following their college graduations, closing that chapter of the Carver family’s story with pride in what they had built together. Jay was also known for his remarkable physical strength and loved to arm wrestle. Fellow Navy pilots often volunteered him as their “champion” in friendly competitions across the world—especially against Marines. His talent eventually led him to the National Arm Wrestling Competition in Atlanta, GA. An avid outdoorsman, Jay loved fishing and hunting black bear and wild boar with his award-winning Plott hounds. Raising Plott puppies brought him immense joy, second only to time spent with his family. He mentored countless young boys, many now grown men, who followed him through the mountains on hunting and fishing adventures and remained dear friends throughout his life. In 2015, he was inducted into the Tennessee Bear Hunters Association Hall of Fame for his lifelong devotion to the sport and for passing its traditions to the next generation Jay’s faith was a quiet but steady compass. He grew up attending Liberty Church and, beginning in 1973, worshiped at Laurel Springs Christian Church with his wife and children, remaining a faithful member throughout his life. For more than 30 years, he and his wife opened their home to youth group gatherings, offering devotions, food, games, meaningful activities, and assisting with programs and plays for special occasions and holidays—creating lasting memories for generations of young people. Above all, Jay was a family man. His love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was the heartbeat of his world. Though Navy obligations meant Jay missed some moments during his children’s youth, he remained a steadfast and involved father, supporting them fully and showing up for everything he could, from attending every home softball and basketball game Tamara played from elementary school through college to hosting Jayson’s college fraternity–sorority mixer on the farm. He continued that devotion throughout their adult lives, encouraging them in their chosen professions and taking great pride in the paths they pursued. Jay vowed never to miss anything once grandchildren arrived, and he kept that promise. He stopped whatever he was doing for an unexpected visit, celebrated every holiday with joy, and cherished every gathering. Of all the names he held, “Paw” was one of his most favorite. He was profoundly proud that his grandson, PFC Kale Carver, chose to answer the call to duty and now serves his country with honor in the United States Army, carrying forward the family’s tradition of service. His home was a place of solace and total contentment, always open to visits from loved ones and friends with many celebrations in the backyard from open pit barbeques to formal occasions that included July 4th celebrations, bridal showers, engagement parties, weddings, receptions, his 40th and 50th anniversary celebrations. Just as Jay’s wife faithfully supported him in every endeavor, he stood beside her participating and working alongside her in all she did, from her church commitments and long‑standing catering partnership with Marilyn Carr to her Farm Bureau youth‑education efforts, festival leadership, and service to multiple community organizations. Together, they lived as a devoted couple whose deep love, mutual encouragement, and joy in each other’s company set a lasting example for all who knew them. Jay was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents Elbert and Glennie Proffitt Carver, Samuel Scott and Hattie Layman Wilson; brothers‑in‑law Michael C. Moore of Cosby and James D. Officer of Sparta; and all his aunts and uncles. He is survived by his beloved and cherished wife of 58 years and 10 months, Bettye Officer Carver; his children Carl Jay (Jayson) Carver III and Tamara Carver, both of Cosby; and his four treasured grandchildren Addy Carver, PFC Kale Carver, Dacey Jay Carver, and Ava Lee Carver. He is also survived by his sisters Janie Carver Moore of Cosby; Helen (Jimmy) Owen of Carthage, TN; and Melissa (Lynn) Sandlin of Holly Springs, NC; sister-in-law Tommy Kay Officer of Sparta; nieces and nephews Manney (Liz) Moore of Cosby; Carter (Renee) Moore of Cosby; Candice (Tony) Barlage, of Golden, CO; Casey (Sarah) Owen of Carthage; Caroline Owen of Golden, CO; Sarah (Michael) Losito of Holly Springs, NC; Katie Sandlin of Raleigh, NC; Kathryn (Tom) Ferraro of South Lyon, MI; great nieces & nephews: Maggey Moore, Manney Moore; Katey Moore, Janey Moore, Carter Moore; Jayce Owen, Hadley Owen, Ezra Owen; Elliott Losito; Jemma Ferraro. Cousins: two first cousins who were more like brothers Jim (Judy) Bryant and Danny Ray (Irene) Carver, Gail Carver Fancher, Dandridge; along with Tennessee, Florida, Colorado cousins, and two of his closest lifelong Navy friends, Ned Gross of Vidalia, GA, and Gary Parham of Newnan, GA. Jay will be remembered as a man whose love ran deep, whose devotion never wavered, and whose presence filled every room with warmth and strength. His family was the heartbeat of his world, and everything he did—every early morning, every long day, every sacrifice—was an offering of love to the people he cherished most. His boundless work ethic was legendary, powered by those great, powerful muscles that seemed carved from the very mountains he roamed. Yet it wasn’t just his strength that left an impression—it was the way he paired it with gentleness, humility, and a servant’s heart. When Jay told a story, he didn’t just speak; he pulled you in. His hearty laugh, rich and unmistakable, wrapped around you like a warm blanket. And when bluegrass music drifted through the air, it was as if his soul leaned in a little closer. Whether he was navigating turbulent skies with the precision of a seasoned aviator or tending the harvest with the steady patience of a lifelong farmer, Jay approached every task with purpose, gratitude, and grace. His life was a testament to unwavering faith—a man who loved God and country with every fiber of his being. And nothing delighted him more than the music of his two favorite banjo players—his grandson Kale Carver and his nephew Carter Moore. He could listen to them for hours, pride shining in his eyes, joy softening his smile. Those moments were his treasures. Jay’s legacy is stitched from love, strength, laughter, music, and faith—and it will echo for generations. A Celebration of Jay’s Life will be held on July 11 at Laurel Springs Christian Church, Cosby, TN. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m., with the service following at 2:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to share stories and honor a life lived fully and well. Interment will follow at Waters‑Large Cemetery, with United States Navy military honors.
