Edith Redmond

Edith Allen Redmond joined many friends and family in heaven on Wednesday morning, April 12, 2017. Edith was born February 21, 1920 in Newport and was the beloved wife of Dr. Charles Redmond Sr. who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. M.O. Allen Sr. , brother M.O. Allen Jr. and sister Marjorie Allen Cowan. She is survived by three children, Dr. Charles Redmond of Little Rock, AK, daughter and son-in-law, Amelia and John Galbraith of Milton, GA, son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Terry Redmond of Albuquerque, NM and one granddaughter, who was the joy of her life, Lauren Galbraith Agee and grandson-in-law Taylor Agee along with several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Redmond was educated in the local schools and was a member of the first graduating class of West End High in Nashville, Tennessee. Following High School, she attended Ward Belmont School for Young Ladies. During World War II, Edith worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge and was always proud of her service there. Before her marriage, Edith worked at the Health Department and the Department of Employment in Newport. Mrs. Redmond was the oldest member of the Newport United Methodist Church having joined the Northern Methodist Church in 1932. She was an original member of Newport's Clifton Club and a charter member of the Walter Barker Sunday School class. She leaves many lifelong and new friends, several great neighbors and a special friend, Mrs. Frances Thomas. Edith loved her assisted living home in Milton, Georgia as well as many great friends and caregivers there. Arbor Terrace Assisted Living and their staff provided great comfort to Edith as well as her family over the past 4 years. Edith's funeral will be held at The Newport First United Methodist Church Chapel on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dr. James Bennington officiating with burial to follow at The Union Cemetery in Newport. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday prior to the funeral service.
