Emma Dean James

Emma Dean Mason James, age 96, of Newport, passed away Sunday July 14, 2019. She was the loving wife of 72 years to the late Paul James, who passed away on July 5, 2011. She was born in Marshall, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Ernest and Princy (Gentry) Mason. Emma Dean was a true homemaker. She loved to cook for her family and others that her husband brought home. She was always ready for guests, former pastors and friends. She loved canning, quilting and working with her flowers. She worked over 30 years at Newport Dry Goods. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: J. L. Mason, Eugene Mason of Newport: L.V. Mason, Burnett Mason, Loys Mason and Marvin Mason of Gastonia, North Carolina; sister, Fayetta Mason of Parrottsville; grandson-in-law, Earl Wade. She is survived by her sons, Gary (Margaret) James of Knoxville, and Freddy (Beth) James, Sr. of Newport; brother, Cleyon Mason, Belmont, North Carolina; granddaughters, Dawanna (Mark) King, Christi Wade, of Knoxville, Tracey (Jimmy) Achenbach, of Huntsville, Alabama, Amy (Charles) Evans, of Newport and grandson, Freddy James, Jr. (Jurron Bradley), of New York; great-grandchildren, Ian and Zachary King, Jakob, Eli and Josie Wade, Elizabeth (fiancé, Saxton Long) and Charlie Evans; sisters-in-law, Kathleen James, Joyce Cox and Ruby James. She was a member of English Creek Baptist Church, Newport, and a former member of Bethel Baptist Church, Parrottsville. The family would like to give a special thanks to Wellington Place and Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice for their special love and care. The family will receive friends from 5:00p m -7:00 pm Tuesday, July 16, 2019, with funeral services following at 7:00pm in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tom Shelton officiating. Burial will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, July 17, 2019 in Union Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Freddy James, Jr., Charlie Evans, Jakob Wade, Ian King, Eli Wade, and Zachary King.
