Mary Dee Otinger

Mary Dee Ottinger, age 94, of Salem Road, Parrottsville, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Mary Dee was born, July 6, 1920, in Parrottsville. She was a retired teacher and belonged to the Cocke County Retired Teachers Association. She taught 25 years at Parrottsville High School and 5 years at the new Parrottsville Elementary School. She was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, serving on the council and various committees of the church. She belonged to the WELCA, and taught Sunday School, a great part of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Julia Neas Ottinger; by her husband, Willis D. Ottinger; an infant son; a brother, Doyle Ottinger; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Carlisle Ottinger and Bonnie Carlisle Ottinger; a nephew, Carlton Eugene Ottinger; a sister, Hazel O. LaFollette; a brother-in-law, Newell LaFollette; and a nephew Ted LaFollette. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Janie Cline Ottinger; a granddaughter, Haley Allena Ottinger, all of Parrottsville; a grandson, and his wife, Bradley Allen Ottinger and Stephanie Gelinas Ottinger; great-grandchildren, Breanna Nicole Ottinger, Braden Allen Ottinger, Brent Andrew Ottinger, and Bailee Ann Ottinger, all of Jacksonville, NC; a niece, Treva LaFollette; a special nephew and his wife, Wayne and Alma Lou LaFollette, all of Parrottsville; and several other nieces and nephews.She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Charlsie Hawk and Joan Birdwell of Johnson City; sister-in-law, Dorothy Ottinger, of Greeneville; and brother-in-law, Trent Ottinger of Parrotttsville. A special thanks to all the pallbearers, as well as, Cotton Davis, Nancy Johnson, Joyce Ottinger, Phyllis Luttrell, Johnny Charles and Dorothy Louise Ottinger, members of the Adult Sunday School Class at Salem Lutheran Church and WELCA members of Salem Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Salem Lutheran Church WELCA 3001 Salem Road, Parrottsville, TN 37843 in memory of Mary Dee. The family will receive friends Friday, July 11, 2014 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Manes Funeral Home. Mrs. Ottinger's body will lie in state from 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm Saturday, with funeral services following at 2:00 pm at Salem Lutheran Church, with Rev. Pat McLaughlin officiating.
