Robert "Bob" Self

Obituary for Robert D. (Bob) Self April 24, 1930 to October 15, 2017 Former businessman Robert (Bob Self) passed away October 15, 2017. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends and other loved ones. One of 13 children he was born in Del Rio, Tennessee. He worked on his family farm until entering the armed services during the Korean War. Part of his service was competed in the military police in Fort Riley, Kansas. During his leave in the summer of 1954, he married the love of his life Betty (Pat) Lamb. Bob owned and operated the Texaco Station on Broadway for several years where he established many relationships in the community and employed many young men who became lifelong friends. His primary business was Bob Self Auto Parts. He and his wife owned and managed that business side by side for over 30 years. As a public servant, he contributed to Cocke County in many ways. He was active in the Lion's club and served on several boards including the Union Cemetery Board, Cocke County Library Board, and was elected to the Board of Aldermen where he oversaw the management of the Newport Community Center. Bob served as a board member at Newport Federal Bank for over 30 years. He was active in the Presbyterian Church and filled many roles including deacon and elder. After a long career in business, he and Betty retired to their beloved Poplar Cove Farm in Del Rio where together they built a log home. For over 27 years they entertained and hosted a variety of functions and celebrations for family and the community. Their greatest love during that time was the birth of two grandsons who learned to love Poplar Cove and the surrounding mountains as much as their grandparents. Over the past three years declining health required the couple to move into assisted living and later moved back to a daughter's home to be cared for. Bob was preceded in death by his parents W.H. Self and Alice Brandon Self and 11 siblings. He is survived by his sister Edith Self Barrett of Del Rio and nephew Keith Self whom he considered a brother. Also preceding him in death was his cherished grandson Robert Isaac Elkins in 2008. Bob leaves behind his lifetime love and partner Betty (Pat) Lamb Self and two daughters, Robyn Self Proffitt and Patti Lamb Self. Both reside in Newport. He will also be missed by his younger grandson William Robert (Bob) Heasley, currently finishing school in Rapid City, South Dakota. All friends and family are welcomed to share in the celebration of a life well lived. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 18th at the Presbyterian Church on Hedrick Drive in Newport from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. A service will follow at 7 pm. The graveside service will be held at the Mulberry Gap Cemetery on Blue Mill Road in Del Rio at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 19th. The funeral procession will originate at 10 a.m. at Manes Funeral Home located at 363 East Main Street, in Newport and proceed to the Mulberry Gap Cemetery.
