Thomas Allen "Big Al" Hutson

Thomas Allen Hutson, known lovingly as ‘Big Al’ passed away on January 13, 2025 at the age of 83, in his hometown of Newport, Tennessee. Big Al had a larger than life personality, the kind that made you think he would live forever. To know Big Al is to love him. He never met a stranger, and instantly made everyone around him feel like family with his detailed stories, witty jokes, and contagious laugh. He lived a lot of lives in his 83 years. Beginning a career in construction laid the groundwork for him to forge several paths of his own throughout his life. He started a railroad contracting company, working with Norfolk Southern (formerly Southern Railway), all while simultaneously operating a motel, building pools, and running many other Newport businesses. Over the years, Big Al wore many hats, and he worked hard in every phase. One of his many famous lines was, “working people are happy people” and if you knew Big Al, he was always happy. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and dedicated football and baseball coach. While work was important, he also knew how important time with his family and friends was. Whether it was trout fishing in Cherokee, hunting with his family and friends, or drawing up a little league play, he always lived in the moment. Above all else, Big Al was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Hutson and Velma McMahan; Brothers, Jerry (Shirley) Hutson, and Earl Hutson; Son, Thomas Allen Hutson II. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Linda Hutson; Big Al’s legacy will live on through his children, Kim Hutson Allen, Allen ‘Lil Al’ Hutson and daughter-in-law Allison Hutson. Grandchildren Rachel (Dominique) Coclough, Brandon Hutson, Alex (Lily) Hutson, and Skyler Allen. Great grandchildren Rebecca Hutson, Michael Hutson, Noah Coclough, Isaiah Coclough, and Mayla Coclough. He is also survived by special sisters-in-law Debbie (Kenny) Eisenhower, Jobie Owenby and Randy Allen; along with a host of other family members and friends. The family will receive friends from 5 pm-7 pm Thursday, January 16, 2025, with the funeral service following at 7 pm in Manes Funeral Home Chapel.
