William N. McSween

William N. McSween, Newport Tax Accountant, died on October 5, 2015, at his office from natural causes. He was born November 11, 1934, in Newport, Tennessee at the home of his parents, J. Carty McSween, a Newport Attorney, and Elizabeth Montgomery McSween, long time teacher at Newport Grammar School. He attended Newport Grammar School and graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1952 from Cocke County High School. He attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the University Of Tennessee College Of Law. Following his service with the United States Army, stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska, he returned to Newport and worked as a paralegal in the office if his brother, James C. McSween, Jr., until he established his own tax preparation practice which he followed till his death. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newport and was a member and officer of the Newport Theatre Guild and actively followed and attended concerts and stage productions in the area whenever possible. He participated as a member of the Knoxville Choral Society and Walters State Community Chorus, as well as in the choir at his church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) McSween Welch, and his sister-in-law, Jean Alexander McSween. He is survived by his brother, James C. McSween, Jr., and wife, Geraldine W. McSween of Newport and his twin brother, David L., McSween and wife, Mary Homer Fowler McSween. Of Lakeland, FL and Sevierville, TN. He is also survived by his nephews, Jimmy McSween of Etowah, Steve McSween of Knoxvile, and Philip McSween of Nashville, and his nieces Elizabeth Fowler McSween Harrison of Englewood, FL, E. Wynn Welch Grande of Portsmouth, NH, Catherine "Kate" Welch of Minneapolis, MN, Anne Stuart Welce of Chicago, IL, and Margaret Merritt Welch of Burlington, VT, and a host of great-nephews and great-nieces. He will be especially missed by his great-nephew, J. Carty McSween, IV, Newport Attorney, and his traveling companions, Joan Steele Lambert, Ann Davis, and Jerry Maloy, with whom he enjoyed good music and good theatre. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on Monday, October 12, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. James L. Bennington officiating. Visitation will precede the service from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Manes Funeral Home is making arrangements.
