Dorothy Brady Howard

October 10, 1932 - January 23, 2022

Dorothy Virginia Brady Howard passed peacefully on January 23, 2022 at the age of 89. She was a lifelong resident of the Dutch Bottoms/Rankin Community in Cocke County, Tennessee and a longtime member of Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church. Dorothy is survived by son and daughter in law Jeff & Lainey Howard of Lumberton, NC, step grandchildren Bobby Joe Howard (Crystal), Robin Howard, Angie Ray, Jennifer Messer (Jerry), and Jackie Stone (Mike) along with a host of other family and friends. She was preceded in death by husband James David (Dave) Howard, step children Bobby Howard, JD Howard Jr. & Annie Howard, step grandson Freddie Ray, parents James Lawson Brady & Ada Helen Webb Brady, grandparents George Brady & Sallie Lewis Brady, and George Washington Webb & Julia Susan Thornton. Dorothy lived and modeled a life of love and service to others. She attended the McNabb School and then graduated from Cocke County High School in 1951. She was active with her CCHS class well past their 50th class reunion. She taught for a year at Rankin School and always appreciated the local schools and teachers because she understood how very hard they work. She later worked at Parks Belk in Newport and then at Enka where she successfully lobbied to get a custom tool created to help her operate machinery because she was height challenged. She was an original PTA/PTO member and an active volunteer and classroom mom at Edgemont Elementary. She was known for her cooking skills and especially for her Coconut Cake which was known to bring a premium in many a fundraiser. Through the years, Dorothy was recognized for her long time service by the American Red Cross, Mariner Retirement Home, and as Food Fund Director at Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church. She is known by many from her activities with her church, water aerobics at the Newport Community Center, the Cocke County Republican Party, and for decades as an election official/judge in her precinct. The family will receive friends at Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022 with the funeral service at 1:30 pm, with Rev. Mike Strange and Rev. Jimmy Williams officiating. Burial in the Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church cemetery. Family and friends may sign the guest register online at: www.manesfuneralhome.com.
