H. Glenn Gray

H.Glenn Gray of Newport TN, died on March 19th at Wellington Manor in Newport TN. He was born March 28th, 1937 in Cosby TN, a son of Olsie G. and Addie R. Gray. His youth was spent in Parrottsville, TN on a family farm. He attended Parrottsville Elementary School and graduated from Parrottsville High School. After graduating from high school, he earned a B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Science with specializations in physiology, genetics, and animal breeding from Cornell University in Ithaca NY. His professional career in academics involved appointments as a professor at the Universities of Maine and Rhode Island in the Animal and Veterinary Sciences Departments. He taught and advised hundreds of undergraduate students and guided over 20 graduate students in their research studies. He conducted research in animal physiology related to farm animal reproduction, genetics, farm animal breeding, and in the physiology of stress related to farm animal well-being, while publishing papers in several scientific journals. At the University of Rhode Island, he served as Chairman of the Animal and Veterinary Science Department, as University Director of Central Laboratory Animal Resources, and as a University Associate Coordinator of Research. Later in his career, he worked in Washington D.C. for the USDA as the Principal Animal Physiologist and Research Program Leader in Animal Physiology in CSREES. In this capacity, he administered and coordinated activities with University Experiment Stations nationwide on individual and multi-state research projects in animal physiology. Other activities involved administrating Special Research Grants in animal physiology and biotechnology, and administrating Facilities Grants for the construction of research facilities at several Land Grant Universities. He was an original member of the National Animal Genome and National Animal Germplasm committees and helped establish the USDA National Gene Mapping Program for farm animals with USDA and university scientists. He also chaired a USDA Interagency Group on Farm Animal Well-being. Since retiring, he has lived in Parrottsville and Newport TN. He was preceded in death by his parents Olsie and Addie Gray, a brother Douglas Gray, a sister Florence Soltys, a sister Druann Gregg, his first wife Marcia Anne Victor, and his fiancé Jeanette Sawyer of Bybee TN. Surviving relatives include a son Brian Gray with granddaughters Abigail Gray and Kourtney Walker and grandson Jason Gray as well as a great grandson Dominic Trujillo by Abigail; a daughter and son-in-law Karen and Daniel Cady with grandsons Zachary and Alex Cady; a sister Carolyn Arwood of Parrottsville TN; and a brother-in-law John Soltys of Chapel Hill NC. Nieces and a nephew include Jacqueline Henderson of Williamsburg VA, Rebecca Jones of Blacksburg VA, Cynthia Gregg of Lawrenceville VA, Tracye Martin of New Market TN, Kristye Banta of Nashville TN, and Mark Spence of Parrottsville TN. A Visitation from 1-2 PM and a Memorial Service from 2-3 PM Sunday March 24 will be at Manes Funeral Home, 363 East Main St, Newport TN.
