Lawrence "Larry" Shendock

Lawrence “Larry” Shendock can no longer say, as he often would, “I’m alive and well, contrary to popular belief” ~~~Larry bid his farewell, with his family by his side, on his 80th Birthday, July 19th 2026. All is indeed “quiet on the western front” now~~~Classic Larry sayings and quips also included, “watch out for the alligators”, “look alive”, and “nobody said it was going to be easy”. He embraced the Hunter S. Thompson quote, “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”. Larry was born in Rochester New York on July 19th 1946, the son of Edward John Shendock and Myra Van Fleet. He grew up in Newark New Jersey, made some earnings downtown as a kid using a homemade shoe shining box, and worked for over 30 years at Anheuser Busch Brewery. He spent his teenage years, and raised his family, in Whitehouse Station New Jersey, as well as resided in New Hampshire for a period. He moved to Newport Tennessee a month before he died. Larry was a member of the American Legion Post 284 Whitehouse Station NJ. He was a good story teller, and had a collection of colorful tales from his life. He enlisted and served as a chef in the United States Army, during which time he was stationed in Germany for a year. He recalled adventures of Army training in the Okefenokee swamp, a troop ship ride across the Atlantic Ocean on the USNS Buckner, partying with a gypsy caravan, and luckily avoiding trouble upon realizing he had mistakenly found himself in East Germany. He was a “people person”, and much enjoyed socializing. Highlights of his life included being a husband and Dad, friendships and relationships, time spent with family at their cabin in Tennessee, hosting Balloon Festival Parties and family gatherings, thrills of riding his motorcycle and fast cars, outings in New York City, joys of animal companionship, and creating good times. Larry also fondly enjoyed feeding people; if you ever left his home hungry it was your own fault. He had a big heart. His jovial, humorous, generous spirit was much appreciated by whomever he encountered. Larry will be greatly missed, especially by his wife of 46 years, Eileen, his daughter, Lauren, and son-in-law, Anthony. He was sadly predeceased by his son Matthew in 2024. Let’s remember Larry by always making room for others at the table, and making sure to share life’s joys with each other.
