Mackey Ray Winter

Mackey Ray Winter, age 70, of Parrottsville, passed away Monday, May 4, 2026. Born September 14, 1955, to Mack and Wilma (Shelton) Winter, Mackey grew up in the Parrottsville community, attending Parrottsville Elementary and Parrottsville High School. After graduating from high school, Mackey attended Walters State Community College, where he earned his Associate's degree. He would go on to continue his education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. After a brief stint teaching at Parrottsville Elementary, Mackey took over the family business, operating Lincoln Avenue Grocery for many years, in addition to Wilma's Too Restaurant. While at Parrottsville High School, he would meet his future wife, Michelle Trentham. The two married in 1981, spending 45 years together. The couple went on to have two children, Holly and Matthew. Mackey had a love of sports, especially baseball. He coached Little League teams at the Newport City Park and recreation basketball teams at the Newport Community Center. He was an Atlanta Braves fan through and through, attending many games with his father as a young adult. He particularly loved listening to the Braves on local radio. He had a great knowledge of history and enjoyed all things related to politics. He frequently penned letters to the editor that appeared in The Newport Plain Talk. Mackey was preceded in death by his mother and father, Wilma and Mack Winter; father-in-law and mother-in-law, J.H. and Maxine (Nease) Trentham. Mackey is survived by his wife, Michelle; daughter, Holly (Chris); son, Matthew; sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Bill Moore; nephew, Alex (Savannah) Moore; aunt, Shelby (Joe) Smith; aunt, Ora Lee Conard; brother-in-law, Ronald (Maxine) Trentham; and several special cousins. Visitation will be held Friday, May 8, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Manes Funeral Home with funeral services following.
