Patrick Warren Proffitt

Patrick Warren Proffitt, age 77, joined a host of loved ones in paradise on Monday, July 13, 2026. Pat was a fiercely loving husband, father, papaw, brother, uncle, and friend to more than can be counted. He was a man of these mountains, with an abiding love for the ridges and hollers, the rainbow trout, the black bears, the whitetail, and the people who call this home. His life was defined by three things: faith, family, and service. Pat's faith was unshakable and rooted in a belief in the unconditional love of God. That love of God inspired his love for his family, standing by them in good times and bad, always being sure to say, "I love you, buddy." God's love and his love for his family informed his service to others to make Cocke County a better place, serving as a firefighter for the City of Newport for over thirty years; the Cocke County School Board for over twenty years; and the Cocke County Legislative Body. More importantly, though, you'd find Pat delivering firewood, vegetables from his garden, and warm shirts to folks who had no one, serving in a quiet way. Pat's love was God's love. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Ray and Cordelia Proffitt; brother, Tony Proffitt; son, Jesse Proffitt; grandson, Logan Proffitt, and nephew Matthew Proffitt. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Proffitt; sons Ben Proffitt (Rhonda Varner) of Parrottsville, TN, Travis Proffitt (Roy Harlan) of Chilhowie, VA; and grandson, Liam Proffitt, of Parrottsville, TN; brother Mike Proffitt (Barbara Proffitt) of Newport, TN; Chris Proffitt (Robyn Proffitt) of Newport, TN; Eutha Hageman (Johnny Hageman) of Rogersville, TN, and sister-in-law, Kathy Proffitt; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 20, 2026, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Newport. Service to follow with the Reverends Natalie Smart, Marta Cogburn, and David Woody officiating. In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or their charity of choice.
